The environmentally friendly design of the popular Maho Bay Camps [1] was improved upon at Maho’s sister resort,
Estate Concordia (Concordia, 340/776-6240, U.S. toll-free 800/392-9004, fax 340/776-6504, www.maho.org [2]), overlooking Salt Pond Bay [3] in southeastern St. John [4]. Concordia has two kinds of accommodation, eco-tents ($155–185 winter, $105 summer) and studios ($150–220 winter, $105–160 summer).
The eco-tents, which can sleep up to six people, are constructed with recycled material and employ modern eco-friendly technology to keep their environmental footprint minimal. Four are accessible to disabled travelers. Though they are called tents, these accommodations are more like tree houses. The studios, which were half-built condominiums when developer Stanley Selengut bought the estate, are more traditional villa-style accommodations, but they have been retrofitted, where possible, with environmentally friendly appliances and furniture. Selengut is steadily expanding the resort; there were some 40 eco-tents by the end of 2008 and more planned for the future.
Guests at Concordia enjoy a few luxuries absent at Maho Bay Camps. Each unit has a private bath with solar-heated shower, and there is a pool on the property. There are fully-equipped kitchens and composting toilets (newer units are connected to a sewage treatment system). Many of the units also have spectacular views of Salt Pond Bay [3] and Ram’s Head [5]. A 15-minute hike takes guests directly to the beach at Salt Pond Bay. The Estate Concordia restaurant serves dinner nightly during the high season, using organic and local ingredients. Yoga classes, dancing, and special events take place on the covered pavilion next to the restaurant.
