More direct flights from the mainland arrive in St. Thomas [1] than any other Virgin Island. During the winter travel season, Delta, U.S. Airways, American, and United fly nonstop from major U.S. cities including New York, Baltimore, Miami, Charlotte, and Chicago.
In addition, several commuter airlines, including Cape Air, provide daily service from San Juan, Puerto Rico [2]. Seaborne Airlines flies daily from the Old San Juan harbor to St. Thomas and Charlotte Amalie Harbor.
The Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) is near Lindberg Bay [3], about four miles west of Charlotte Amalie [4]. You will pay $8 for a taxi from the airport to town, and between $12 and $15 to the east end resorts. Car rental companies Avis and Hertz have desks at the airport.
Most people who visit St. Thomas come aboard a cruise ship. Nearly every major cruise line calls on the island, including Carnival, Holland America, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Celebrity. Cruise ships dock at the West Indian Company Dock in Havensight or the Crown Bay Marina on the west side of Charlotte Amalie. Check the back cover of St. Thomas This Week for an up-to-date cruise ship schedule.
There is a twice-monthly ferry from Fajardo, Puerto Rico [5], to Charlotte Amalie and St. John provided by Transportation Services (340/776-6282, $100 round-trip). Ferries travel to St. Thomas [1] daily from Tortola [6] and St. John [7], and several days a week from Virgin Gorda [8]. In recent years, there has been an on-again, off-again daily ferry from St. Croix to St. Thomas.
