Red Hook [1] is a busy hub on the east end: You’ll find shops, restaurants, marinas, and ferries departing to Tortola [2] and St. John [3]. You probably wouldn’t know it, but Red Hook is also home to a largely intact salt pond, a natural wetland that provides a habitat for animals and protects the island from storm damage.
In 2008, local citizens opened the Red Hook Salt Pond Nature Trail, a 0.2-mile boardwalk that skirts the edge of the pond adjacent to Red Hook Road, on the east side of town. Placards discuss the plants and animals that make up the salt pond habitat.
