Many rate P. H. Hoeft State Park (U.S. 23 N, Rogers City, 989/734-2543, state park vehicle permit required) as the most beautiful state park along Michigan’s Lake Huron shore. It’s easy to see why. With a mile-long swath of soft, white sand, low rolling dunes, and a mixed hardwood/conifer forest, it offers a breathtaking, simple beauty.
Surprisingly, it’s also one of the least visited state parks in the Lower Peninsula. Even the 144-site modern campground ($22), set against mature pines and hardwoods with lots of shade and privacy, sits half empty most of the time. Head directly for sites 1–33, located just a few steps from the beach. One cabin and four rent-a-tents are also available.
Behind the park’s picnic area lies an almost totally undeveloped area, with dunes and woods that abound in wildlife and vegetation. Naturalists can search for the more than 40 species of wildflowers that grow here, including many orchids and irises rare in the state and North America. More than four miles of trails loop through the area for hikers and cross-country skiers.
