The downside to skiing or snowboarding in Colorado is getting to the resorts and back, given road conditions and traffic along I-70 in winter. The Ski Train [1] is the answer to this problem, with weekend service to Winter Park from Union Station [2] in downtown.
Winter Park Ski Resort is owned by the city of Denver [3] and managed by Intrawest. The small town of Winter Park is to the west of the ski area. There are over 2,000 acres to ski and 134 runs on three mountains here.
In addition, transportation is available to nearby Devil’s Thumb Ranch [4], the state’s only resort devoted to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
By far, the best wa yp to get to Winter Park is to take the Ski Train [1]. If driving from Denver [3], take I-70 West to U.S. Highway 40 and over Berthoud Pass to Winter Park.
It’s possible to walk from the ski resort to the town, but chances are you will need to put your gear in storage or lug it along. The resort provides shuttle service to town during peak ski months, so check www.skiwinterpark.com [5] for the latest schedules.
