A thumb of land thrust out into the big lake, Presque Isle Park, about four miles north of downtown Marquette [1] off Lakeshore Boulevard, is a microcosm of the area’s beauty: rocky red bluffs, tall pines, and lovely Lake Superior vistas. You can drive through the 323-acre park, but you’d do better to get out and stroll or ski along its many trails. Watch for albino deer (white-tailed deer lacking pigment), which survive in this protected setting.
Near Presque Isle Park’s entrance, there’s a playground, a picnic area, tennis courts, a marina, and a good spot from which to watch the huge 800-foot freighters arrive at the towering railroad ore dock. Also at the entrance of the park, you can pick up the Marquette Bicycle Path, a paved route that hugs the shoreline all the way to Harvey, offering access to downtown and the Northern Michigan University campus.
