Fort Wilkins Historic State Park [1] (15223 U.S. 41, Copper Harbor, 906/289-4215, state park vehicle permit required, $16–25) has 159 modern sites in two campgrounds, both on Lake Fanny Hooe. Many sites sit along the water and offer decent privacy. For reservations, call 800/447-2757.

West of Ahmeek, the Sunset Bay RV Resort & Campground (2701 Sunset Bay Beach Rd., Eagle River, 906/337-2494 June–Oct. or 941/232-4832 Nov.–May, www.sunset-bay.com [2], $22–27) indeed offers a fine view of the sunset from your tent flap. Many of its 12 tent sites and 18 RV spaces sit on Lake Superior. Three cabins, modern restrooms, a laundry and dump station, a nice swimming beach, a small boat launch, several hiking trails, and wireless Internet access are also available.

Keep in mind that many locals simply head out into the woods on weekends and set up camp near a favorite stretch of beach or river. If you choose to do the same, respect “No Trespassing” signs and observe all backcountry camping practices (such as burying waste, hanging packs, etc.).

Sunsets get top billing at McLain State Park (18350 M-203, Hancock, 906/482-0278, state park vehicle permit required, $16–26 sites, $60 cabins), where the sky often glows in peaches and pinks before the sun melts into Lake Superior. Like most Michigan state parks, the campsites are fine, too, and many come with those waterfront views. Follow M-203 seven miles north of Hancock [3]. For reservations, call 800/447-2757.
