A giant snow gauge on U.S. 41 south of Phoenix proudly marks the Keweenaw’s [1] record snowfall, a staggering 390.4 inches in the winter of 1977–78. It wasn’t an aberration; the surrounding waters of Lake Superior routinely generate colossal lake effect snows, often averaging over 300 inches.
That reliable snowfall, combined with the remarkable local terrain, makes the Keweenaw a haven for snowmobilers, skiers, and snowshoers.
