The Two Hearted is a fine canoeing river, clean and clear and usually quite mellow—except in spring when, depending on snowmelt, it can crank out some pretty serious white water. A state-designated wilderness river, the Two Hearted winds through pine and hardwood forest; the only signs of civilization you’re likely to see are a handful of cottages at the river’s mouth.
It offers plenty of low banks and sandbars, so picnic spots are easy to find. The Two Hearted is also a widely regarded blue-ribbon trout stream, so be prepared for plenty of anglers when the season opens in April.
Put in at the High Bridge state forest campground on County Road 407 for a 23-mile trip to the mouth. (You’ll find two state forest campgrounds and other camping sites along the route.) Alternately, you can hook up with Two Hearted Canoe Trips (County Road 423, Newberry, 906/658-3357), a livery based out of the Rainbow Lodge at the river’s mouth. It operates trips ranging from a couple of hours to three days.
A popular half-day trip departs from the Reed and Green Bridge (east of Muskallonge Lake State Park [1] on County Road 410) and takes out at Lake Superior.
