For ultimate convenience but with a sense of seclusion, the Hiawatha National Forest (www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/hiawatha [1])’s Bay Furnace (906/786-4062, $12–18) is a good choice. Just west of Munising [2], north of M-28, it offers 50 rustic sites with a very nice setting next to Lake Superior and overlooking Grand Island [3]. Some sites almost have their own private stretch of beach, and a short cross-country ski trail at the campground’s north end gives campers a little extra breathing room.
