The St. Ignace (IG-nus) economy benefits from two groups of tourists: those stopping by on their way to Upper Peninsula [1] destinations, and those using it as a base for Mackinac Island [2] day trips and area exploration.
Along with a large supply of lodgings, restaurants, and services, the city at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge [3] has a few attractions of its own, including museums, parks, even a casino. To the east, you’ll also find several islands worth a look.
The easiest way to reach St. Ignace is via car. From the Lower Peninsula, simply cross the Mackinac Bridge; you’ll find St. Ignace at the northern end of “Big Mac.” If you’re already in the U.P. [1], simply head east from Manistique [4] via U.S. 2 or south from Sault Ste. Marie [5] via I-75.
If you have no car of your own, take a Greyhound bus (800/231-2222, www.greyhound.com [6]) to St. Ignace or fly into Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) (231/539-8441, www.pellstonairport.com [7]), rent a vehicle, and head north on U.S. 31, toward the Mackinac Bridge.
