Travelers who find the Huron shore lacking in comparison with the state’s Lake Michigan shore change their minds after a visit to the Forty Mile Point Light. Seven miles north of Rogers City [1] on U.S. 23, a limitless expanse of blue water sweeps in a 180-degree arc to the horizon. A gently sloping beach proves just right for wading, sandcastle building, and swimming. The 52-foot-tall lighthouse, built in 1897, stands guard as a reminder that Huron can, and does, turn dangerous. Though not open to the public, it is a favorite of photographers.
Other lighthouses along this stretch include the 1905 Middle Island Lighthouse and the 1832 Thunder Bay Island Light, both accessible via boat. In Alpena [1], you won’t need a vessel to view the 1914 Alpena Light, a skeletal red structure near the Thunder Bay River.
