While in the Kalamazoo [1] area, you simply must put aside a few hours for the Gilmore Car Museum (6865 Hickory Rd., Hickory Corners, 269/671-5089, www.gilmorecarmuseum.org [2], 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Sat.–Sun. May–Oct., $9 adults, $8 seniors 62 and over, $7 children 7–15), considered one of the top five car museums in the United States.
Situated on 90 landscaped acres northeast of Kalamazoo, not far from Gull Lake, the Gilmore Car Museum houses nearly 200 vintage automobiles in several restored historic barns. Exhibits range from an 1899 locomotive to the infamous 1948 Tucker to muscle cars of the 1970s. Other treats include a new miniature museum and an authentic 1941 diner, a great place for an afternoon snack. All buildings are wheelchair-accessible.
