The Tivoli theater—complete with crystal chandeliers, marble, and silk wall coverings—opened in downtown Frederick in 1926 to host films, plays, musicals, and other artistic endeavors. Though the building fell into serious disrepair by the 1960s (and that was before the flood of 1976), local businesspeople and activists restored the theater and reopened it in 1978 as the area’s finest performance venue. That year, the building was renamed for Frederick residents Dan and Alyce Weinberg, who bought the place in 1959 and helped spur its renovation.

The theater’s pride and joy is the original 1926 Wurlitzer organ, which is still played today. Shows at the Weinberg Center for the Arts now include small symphonic works, classic old movies, dance, country artists, humorists, authors, and kids’ stage shows.
