Once a cable car barn and a powerhouse, the two Beaux-Arts buildings that are now the Charles Theatre are a great warren of open, exposed-brick spaces—with winding hallways into four smaller theaters that hold from 115 to 230 people, and one large auditorium that accommodates 485 people. Independent, art-house, and revivals are the staples at this popular theater, with a smattering of more popcorn-oriented fare as appropriate.
There’s a popular Cinema Sundays series that includes bagel breakfasts and guest speakers. This was once (along with the Club Charles [2] and the Everyman Theatre) the only reason to come to this part of town; now, the renamed Station North Arts District has added options for dinner and post-show drinks.
