While driving and parking in Center City can be somewhat difficult, you’ll usually find a parking meter even in the busiest parts of town if you’re willing to search for up to 20 minutes and walk a few blocks. The Philadelphia Parking Authority’s website (www.philapark.org [1]) provides a directory of parking lots and garages. There are garages all over Center City, especially near the convention center and Avenue of the Arts, but they can be expensive.
Most central areas have metered street parking. The time limit varies depending on the area but is usually only good for 1– 4 hours. Meters accept Smart Cards and coins. The size of a credit card, Smart Cards fit in your wallet so you don’t have to carry change. Once you insert the card into the meter, it deducts $0.25 increments until you remove it or the maximum time limit is reached. They are available in $20 and $50 denominations, and can be purchased at any Shop Rite and 7-Eleven, or online from the Parking Authority (www.philapark.org [1]). Be aware that some areas that have no meters still have time limits. Pay close attention to signs, especially in Center City, or you may get a ticket.
