If you want to delve even deeper into the lavish lives of one of the earliest, wealthiest families in America, take a tour of Nemours Mansion (1600 Rockland Rd., 800/651-6912, www.nemours.org [1], call for hours, $12, ages 12 and over only), which was built in the early 20th century for industrialist, inventor, and philanthropist Alfred I. du Pont.
The nearly 50,000-square-foot French château–style mansion shares its 300 acres with the operational Alfred I. du Pont Hospital for Children. Guests are allowed to enter by guided tour only (offered May–Dec.) and reservations are required.
You’ll spend a minimum of two hours exploring the formal gardens and lavish mansion filled with antiques and works of art. You’ll even get to see the family’s antique cars in the garage.
