The official State Theater of Pennsylvania is the Walnut Street Theatre, the oldest continually operating theater in the English-speaking world. It opened in 1809 as a circus house, but it is now known for more high-minded fare.
Luminaries who have graced its stage include Edwin Booth, Marlon Brando, Henry and Jane Fonda, Audrey Hepburn, and Sidney Poitier.
Besides the 1,000-plus-seat main theater, it also holds Studio 3 and Studio 5, smaller houses for second-stage productions and rentals to outside theater companies.
