Most of the action on the Avenue of the Arts goes on below Market Street, but Freedom Theatre is struggling to keep North Broad Street hopping. The oldest African American theater in Pennsylvania, Freedom is currently in a state of limbo, with no regular season and a severely slashed employment roster.
In the past, it has showcased fine plays based on African American stories, like Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. Its operations today consist primarily of conducting theater and dance classes for kids and adults.
Here is hoping that it may find new life again as a venue for professional shows, as North Philly could use the positive energy of a thriving theater.
