African American Museum in Philadelphia

Founded in 1976 for the bicentennial, the African American Museum in Philadelphia was the first museum in a major U.S. city dedicated to celebrating African American culture and history. The museum holds over 750,000 objects including arts, artifacts, clothing, furniture, weapons, documents, photographs, records, and diaries.

There are three dominant themes: the African Diaspora, the Philadelphia Story, and the Contemporary Narrative, but the museum is continually adding new, permanent, and rotating exhibits, like one dedicated to female African American artists.

The museum also hosts a variety of lectures and other educational programming.
