Just when you thought you couldn’t get any more artery-clogging than the cheesesteak, along comes the Schmitter. In addition to beef, onions, and extra cheese, the Schmitter comes with tomatoes, salami, and a special secret mayonnaise-y sauce.
The sandwich has become a widely known Philly phenomenon, and is now also sold at Citizens Bank Park during Phillies [2]’ games. McNally’s also offer plenty of other less intimidating house specialties, soups, salads, and, of course, regular cheesesteaks and hoagies.
A casual spot in the refined Chestnut Hill neighborhood, it also has a long history. An early incarnation of the restaurant was established in 1921 by Rose McNally to provide lunch for the trolley operators, including her husband.
Her great-granddaughters operate the business today out of the same house the family bought to accommodate the growing business in 1927.
