N. Concourse Dr., W. Fairmount Park
Framing the street in two separate sections on the way to Memorial Hall from Center City stands the large bronze Smith Civil War Memorial. It was erected 1897–1912 with funds provided by its wealthy namesake, Richard Smith. There is a bronze statue of Smith himself, along with accomplished war heroes Generals Hancock and McClellan, and others.
At the base of each tower is a curved wall with a bench, known as the whispering benches; if you sit at one end and whisper, someone at the other end can hear you.
