Halfway between Elbe [1] and Ashford [2] is Mount Tahoma Trails (www.skimtta.com [3]), featuring 75 miles of groomed cross-country skiing in the winter, and mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking on the trails in the summer. A series of three huts and a yurt provide overnight accommodations for six people (up to 14 in some of these), making it possible to ski or hike from hut to hut.
There’s no charge to stay in the huts, but a $25 per-person per-night damage deposit is required in advance, and you’ll need a Sno-Park ($11) permit to park your vehicle. Buy one at Ashford Valley Grocery (29716 Hwy. 706 E, 360/569-2560, 6 a.m.–10 p.m.).
