Rooms are in pine cabin-style lodge buildings, ranging from studios up to two-bedroom houses with full kitchens.

Popular with cross-country skiers because of its easy access to the trail system is Aspen Loft (four miles east of Mazama, 509/996-2110, $140 s, $150 d), run by the folks who own Hotel Rio Vista. The cabin, tucked into a grove of aspen trees, sleeps up to six and includes a fully equipped kitchen, TV with VCR, and fireplace.

Located a half mile west of Winthrop [2], River Run Inn (509/996-2173 or 800/757-2709, www.riverrun-inn.com [3]) is a small resort that includes private rooms ($115–140 s or d), a six-bedroom house ($450), and cabins ($175–200 for up to four people). Guests will also appreciate the indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, and riverside location. The house and cabin have full kitchens, and kitchenettes are available in some of the rooms.

North Cascades Basecamp (255 Lost River Rd., Mazama, 509/996-2334, http://northcascadeslodge.com [4], $175 d) serves up hearty meals to all its lodge guests. In winter, rates include full room and board, while summertime comes with a hefty breakfast. Guests share bathrooms and very comfortable group areas, including a fireplace living room, a playroom for kids, library, and a hot tub. Families will also enjoy the sledding hill just outside the lodge. Groups seeking a bit more privacy can choose to rent one of Basecamp’s cabins for six with a full kitchen ($185–285 up to 6), though meals aren’t included with this option.
