Camping

Camp at one of three Forest Service campgrounds in the Mt. Baker [1] area. Douglas Fir Campground (two miles east of Glacier on Mt. Baker Hwy., 518/885-3639 or 877/444-6777, www.recreation.gov [2], mid-May to mid-Sept., $16–18, $9 extra reservation fee), is situated in a beautiful old-growth forest along the Nooksack River and is open all winter.

Silver Fir Campground (13 miles east of Glacier, 518/885-3639 or 877/444-6777, www.recreation.gov [2], mid-May to mid-Sept., $16–18, $9 extra reservation fee) is along the Nooksack with great mountain views.

Hannegan Campground (17 miles east of Glacier and right next to the Mount Baker Wilderness on Forest Road 32, mid-May to mid-Sept.) is a primitive campground with no running water and no fees.

The 411-acre Silver Lake County Park (three miles north of Maple Falls, 360/599-2776, $22 electricity, $17 no hookups) has a beautiful day lodge/information center, year-round camping and RV hookups, showers, swimming, plus boat rentals.

Hutchinson Creek Campground (Mosquito Creek Rd. near Acme) has free camping, but no water. More free camping is at Nooksack City Park (Nooksack Ave. and Madison St.). Dispersed camping is free on Forest Service land below milepost 52; just find a good off-the-road place to camp. Campers and hikers can take showers at the Texaco mini mart near the intersection of Highways 9 and 542.
