Right on the opposite side of the highway from the park entrance is Undi Road, which leads east five miles (the last two are gravel) to the Bogachiel River Trailhead. The trail follows the lush, infrequently visited rainforest valley of the Bogachiel River east for two miles through national forest land until reaching the edge of Olympic National Park [1], where the trail continues all the way up to Seven Lakes Basin (27 miles) or Sol Duc Hot Springs [2] (27 miles).
The lower section of trail in the rain forest is a lovely place for a day hike. Mountain bikers are allowed on the trail as far as the edge of the national park, but it’s a pretty soggy ride.
Camp at Bogachiel State Park [3], four miles south on Highway 101 (360/374-6356, www.parks.wa.gov [4], year-round $13 for tents, $19 for RV hookups), or at the Park Service’s Mora Campground (open year-round, $10), 14 miles west of Forks [5], which offers summertime naturalist programs and nature walks. Dispersed camping (pullouts off the road) is allowed on Forest Service lands throughout Olympic National Forest.
Park RVs at Forks 101 RV Park (901 S. Forks Ave., 360/374-5073 or 800/962-9964). Camp for free at Rayonier’s Tumbling Rapids Park (11 miles northeast of Forks along Hwy. 101, 360/374-6565).
