Between late December and late March, Hurricane Ridge [1] is a popular winter destination for cross-country and downhill skiers, snowboarders, and tubers. A small ski area (360/452-0330) has two rope tows and a Poma lift. It’s open on weekends and during the Christmas–New Year’s holiday.
Ski rentals, including cross-country and Telemark packages, are also available, along with ski lessons. Backcountry skiers will discover a wealth of open country at Hurricane Ridge—check avalanche conditions before heading out.
Park Service naturalists (360/452-0330) offer guided snowshoe walks on weekends and other times in the winter. Snowshoes are provided ($2 donation suggested). The visitors center—where you can warm up—and cafeteria are open winter weekends. The road to the top is open 9 a.m.–dusk Sat.–Mon. and is closed overnight or during storms. Entrance fees are charged on weekends.
Call ahead (360/452-0329) for current road and weather conditions, and always come prepared for the worst. No overnight parking at the summit.
