Pitch a tent at the 12-acre San Juan County Park (along West Side Rd., 360/378-8420, www.co.san-juan.wa.us/parks [1], $28β39), a mile north of Lime Kiln State Park. The 1998 film Practical Magic was filmed here. Because this is the only public campground on the island, you'll need to make advance reservations for the summer. Call 360/378-1842 for reservations ($8 fee) between six days and three months ahead of time. You may find space on a summer weekday, but weekends are usually fully reserved, especially in August. The park has a boat ramp and drinking water but no RV hookups.
Park that RV or pitch a tent at the spacious Lakedale Resort (2627 Roche Harbor Rd., 360/378-2350 or 800/617-2267, www.lakedale.com [2]), which offers a good compromise to families divided between the nature enthusiasts and lovers of creature comforts. The platform canvas cabins at Lakedale offer a camplike setting without the necessity of sleeping on the hard ground. Equipped with queen-size beds and sleeper sofas, these luxury campsites go for $139 for two adults and two kids. This rate includes a continental breakfast served up at the nearby canvas Longhouse each morning.
Lakedale also offers traditional tent sites ($20β42) and RV sites ($57) on the property, plus boat, fishing equipment, and bike rentals to better explore the 82-acre property and its surrounding lakes. Itβs located near the center of the island, 4.5 miles from Friday Harbor, and is open mid-March to mid-October.
More campsites are available at Snug Harbor Marina Resort (1997 Mitchell Bay Rd., 360/378-4762, www.snugresort.com [3], $25) where you'll also find rentals of skiffs, fishing tackle, and crab pots. A small store has supplies and dive tank refills.
Coin-operated showers are available at the Friday Harbor Marina and Roche Harbor Marina.
