San Juan Vineyards (360/378-9463 or 888/983-9463, www.sanjuanvineyards.com [1]) is housed in a century-old schoolhouse three miles out Roche Harbor Road. It produces a limited bottling of wines from the vineyard here, but most of its wine comes from eastern Washington grapes. Stop by for wine-tasting noon–6 p.m. daily.
There are no vineyards at The Island Wine Company (next to the ferry dock in Friday Harbor, 360/378-3229 or 800/248-9463, www.sanjuancellars.com [2], 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily), but you can sample wines made from eastern Washington grapes and bottled under its San Juan Cellars label.
One of the best places to swirl a few glasses of vino under your nose is Steps Winebar (140 A 1st St., Friday Harbor, 360/370-5959, www.stepswinebarandcafe.com [3]). This elegant restaurant and bar offers some of the best selections of wine on any of the islands, and expert staff are on hand to offer great pairing suggestions for the restaurant’s creative menu. Check ahead for special seasonal dinners with selected wine pairings.
