The deep, dark accent woods of the furnishing and decor at
Hungry Goose Bistro (1618 E Main St., Puyallup, 253/845-5747, www.hgbistro.com [1], 5–9:30 p.m. Tues.–Sat.) set the tone for a classy meal supping on Nuevo Bistro–style fare. Inventive entrées such as apple bacon–wrapped scallops drizzled with plum port reduction ($18) and sweet Georgia pecan chicken ($13) light up the menu. On Saturday and Sunday, the Goose pulls out all the stops with a special brunch menu served 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
Another favorite Puyallup eatery is Mama Stortini’s (3207 E. Main St., 253/845-7569, www.mamastortinis.com [2], 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m. Sun.–Thurs., 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Fri., noon–10 p.m. Sat.), a lively spot that focuses on Northwest cooking fused with French and Italian flavors.
For more traditional Italian fare—and the best local pizzas—try Casa Mia (505 N. Meridian, 253/770-0400, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Sun.–Thurs., 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Fri.–Sat.).
Taste German wines at Baron Manfred Vierthaler Winery (253/863-1633), a Bavarian-style hilltop chalet just east of Sumner on Highway 410. The wine-tasting room is open 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Tuesday–Sunday; be sure to try the port and dessert wines. The adjoining restaurant serves traditional German-Bavarian dishes and has a dining room overlooking the Puyallup Valley.
The popular Puyallup Farmers Market (253/845-6755, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Sat. May–Labor Day) features fresh local produce. The market is held downtown next to Pioneer Park. At other times, head out River Road to find the produce stands, or stop by the chamber of commerce for a list of local places.
