In its early years, Everett [1] was home to some of the timber industry’s most successful entrepreneurs. These lumber barons built elaborate mansions in the north end of town on Grand and Rucker Avenues, many of which still stand.
They surround a small but well-restored commercial district around the vicinity of Hewitt Avenue from Broadway west to Grand Avenue. If you tour down Grand Avenue, be sure to stop at the grassy strip that is Grand Avenue Park. With your back to the stately homes in this neighborhood, you will get a panoramic view of Port Gardner and Everett Marina, the Puget Sound’s second largest.
That will whet your appetite for another great viewpoint at American Legion Park less than two miles away—simply head north on Grand Avenue and veer right to Alverson Boulevard when the road forks. You can’t miss the grassy banks of the park sitting on the bluff.
