The main attraction in Langley [1] is simply the charismatic town itself, perched right above Puget Sound. A favorite downtown spot for photos is the life-size bronze Boy and Dog by local sculptor Georgia Gerber.
The 160-foot fishing pier offers great views and a chance to test your fishing pole, and the beach here is a popular place for picnicking and swimming.
South Whidbey Historical Museum (312 2nd St., 360/730-3367, 1–4 p.m. Sat.–Sun.) has local memorabilia in a century-old building.
If your kids are getting restless window shopping, take a quick break at the wooden castle, located in the community park a mile west of town on Maxwelton Road.
Stop for a picnic overlooking the vineyard and apple orchard at Whidbey Island Winery (5237 S. Langley Rd., 360/221-2040, www.whidbeyislandwinery.com [2], noon–5 p.m. Thurs.–Sun.), a family-run vintner. The tasting room here offers sips of creative rhubarb wines and vintages fermented from estate-grown Madeline Angevine grapes.
