One of the most popular student eateries in the U District [1],
Kiku Tempura House (5018 University Way NE, 206/524-1125, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. daily, $8) whips up tempura and teriyaki that’s quick, delicious, and served up in huge portions. Great for a quick lunch or evening meal; order at the counter and wait for them to call your number.
For the ultimate in sushi—even diehard fans from Tokyo are impressed—be sure to make reservations for a meal at Nishino (3130 E. Madison St., 206/322-5800, www.nishinorestaurant.com [2], 5:30–10:30 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 10:30 a.m.–9:30 p.m. Sun., $25). It’s a busy and sometimes-noisy place, but the food is impeccable and perfectly prepared. For a real treat, request the chef’s menu (a fixed-price six-course meal, $60) when you reserve a table. Nishino is expensive, but worth every dollar.
