Dorchester Academy and Museum (8787 E. Oglethorpe Hwy., 912/884-2347, www.dorchesteracademy.com [1], open Tues.βFri. 11 a.m.β2 p.m., Sat. 2β4 p.m., free) was built as a boarding and day school for freed African Americans after the Civil War.
Liberty County [2] was one of the earliest integrated school districts in Georgia, and Martin Luther King Jr. came to Dorchester in 1962 to plan the march on Birmingham. In 1997, an extensive renovation brought the multi-building facility to its current state. The museum is small but features an interesting display of memorabilia.
Take Exit 76 off I-95 and go west on U.S. Highway 84, about two miles past the intersection with U.S. Highway 17.
