Cubans are respectful and courteous, with a deep sense of integrity. You can ease your way considerably by being courteous and patient. Always greet your host with “¡Buenos días!” (“Good morning!”) or “¡Buenas tardes!” (“Good afternoon!”). And never neglect to say “gracias” (“thank you”). Topless sunbathing is tolerated at some tourist resorts, and nude bathing is allowed only on Cayo Largo.
Cubans are extremely hygienic and have a natural prejudice against anyone who ignores personal hygiene.
Smoking is ostensibly prohibited in theaters, stores, buses, taxis, restaurants, and enclosed public areas, but the prohibition is rarely enforced.
Respect the natural environment: Take only photographs, leave only footprints.
