Built in 1909, the Sparkman Street Bridge was slated for demolition in the 1998 after inspectors called its condition “poor.” But citing the success of the Walnut Street Bridge in revitalizing downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, advocates succeeded in saving the bridge. The Shelby Street Bridge reotpened in 2003 as a pedestrian and bike bridge.
The Shelby Street Bridge connects East Nashville neighborhoods with downtown. It is also convenient on Titan game days since the eastern terminus is a few hundred yards from LP Field. Perhaps most significant for visitors, however, is the fact that the views of the downtown cityscape are excellent from here.
