Off Beale Street [1], the Hi-Tone Cafe (1913 Poplar Ave., 901/278-8663, cover varies) is probably the best place to see live music in town. The Hi-Tone books all kinds of acts, from high-energy rockers to soulful acoustic acts. They are really committed to bringing good live music to Memphis [2]. The cover charge for local shows is a few bucks, but tickets for bigger-name acts can run $20 and more. The bar serves respectable burgers and finger foods, excellent martinis, and lots of beer.

Still on Beale Street [1], Alfred’s (197 Beale St., 901/525-3711, cover $5 Fri. and Sat.) has rock acts five nights a week. On Sunday evening, the 17-piece Memphis Jazz Orchestra takes the stage. The dance floor at Alfred’s is one of the best on Beale Street.

One of Beale Street’s most historic nightclubs, The New Daisy (330 Beale St., 901/525-8979, cover $5 and up) books rock ’n’ roll, independent, and a few R&B acts. There are shows most nights of the week; call ahead or check the entertainment listings for a schedule. The Daisy is an all-ages club, and many shows attract a young audience.

Also in midtown, The Buccaneer (1368 Monroe, 901/278-0909, cover varies) books rock acts most days a week. Cover charge rarely tops $5.
