Located just across the Wilmington River from the fishing village of Thunderbolt,
Desposito’s (187 Old Tybee Rd., 912/897-9963, www.despositosseafood.com [1], Tues.–Fri. 5–10 p.m., Sat. noon–10 p.m., $15–25) is a big hit with locals and visitors alike, though it’s not in all the guidebooks. The focus here is on fresh seafood and lots of it, served humbly on tables covered with newspapers. The shrimp is not to be missed—all perfectly fresh, caught wild in local waters.
If you’re checking out a Savannah Sand Gnats minor league baseball game at Historic Grayson Stadium, right across the street is one of Savannah [2]’s best soul food places, Geneva Geneva’s Home Plate (2812 Bee Rd., 912/356-9976, Tues.–Thurs. and Sun. 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 11 a.m.–9 p.m., $10–15). Think incredible fried chicken, moist cornbread, and homemade veggies.
