Topping the list of local spectator sports—indeed, it’s basically the entire list—is the Savannah Sand Gnats (1401 E. Victory Dr., 912/351-9150, www.sandgnats.com [1]) baseball franchise, currently a single-A affiliate of the New York Mets. The attraction here is not the level of play but the venue itself, Grayson Stadium in Daffin Park [2] in the city’s midtown area, a historic venue that’s hosted such greats as Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Mickey Mantle over the years. The Gnats’ season runs April–September.
There’s not a bad seat in the house, so your best bet by far is to just buy a $6 general admission ticket. The games never sell out, so there’s no need to stress. Entertainment runs the usual gamut of minor league shenanigans, including frequent fireworks displays after the games.
