There are several strong public courses in Savannah [1] that are also great bargains. Chief among these has to be the Henderson Golf Club (1 Al Henderson Blvd., 912/920-4653, www.hendersongolfclub.com [2]), an excellent municipal course with reasonable green fees of $39 during the week and $48 on the weekend, both of which include a half-cart.
Another local favorite and unbeatable bargain is the circa-1926 Bacon Park Golf Course (Shorty Cooper Dr., 912/354-2625, www.baconparkgolf.com [3]), comprising three nine-hole courses with a choice of three 18-hole combinations and some very small, fast greens. Green fees hover around $30.
A relatively new course but not one you’d call a bargain is the Club at Savannah Harbor (2 Resort Dr., 912/201-2007, www.theclubatsavannahharbor.com [4]) across the Savannah River on Hutchinson Island, adjacent to the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort. Home to the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament each spring, the Club’s tee times are 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m., with half-light play 2–5 p.m. Green fees are $135, or $70 for twilight fees.
The Wilmington Island Club (501 Wilmington Island Rd., 912/897-1612) has arguably the quickest greens in town and is unarguably the most beautiful local course, set close by the Wilmington River amid lots of mature pines and live oaks. Green fees are $69.
