While live theatre isn’t what is used to be in Savannah [1], the multiuse venue Muse Arts Warehouse (703D Louisville Rd., 912/713-1137, www.musesavannah.org [2]) hosts a variety of community-based plays and performances within a well-restored historic train depot. Get there by taking Liberty Street west from downtown, where it turns into Louisville Road.
The semi-pro troupe at the Historic Savannah Theatre [3] (222 Bull St., 912/233-7764, www.savannahtheatre.com [4]) performs a busy, rotating schedule of oldies revues (typical title: Return to the ’50s), which make up for their lack of originality with the tightness and energy of their talented young cast of regulars.
For a fun evening of boozy, interactive theater, go down to the River Street [5] docks on a Thursday night for Murder Afloat (boards next to the Hyatt Regency, cruise starts at 9:30 p.m., 912/232-6404, www.murderafloat.com [6], $26.95 adults, $18.95 children under 12). The mysterious fun happens during a 90-minute cruise on the Savannah River aboard one of two riverboats, during which you can talk to the actors and try to figure out “whodunit.” Food is included and there’s a cash bar onboard.
There are few things to recommend Savannah’s south side to the visitor, but one of them is the Armstrong Atlantic State University Masquers (11935 Abercorn St., 912/927-5381, www.finearts.armstrong.edu [7]), the second-oldest college theater group in the country (only Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals is older). Now nearing their 75th anniversary, the Masquers boast a newly restored performance space at the Jenkins Theatre, and might surprise you with the high quality of their performances—despite being a student program. Parking is never a problem.
