Across the street from Gene’s Haufbrau, the retro-chic Voodoo Lounge (15 Magnolia Ln., 843/769-0228, Mon–Fri. 4 p.m.–2 a.m., Sat.–Sun. 5:30 p.m.–2 a.m., kitchen open until 1 a.m.) is another very popular West Ashley [1] hangout. It has a wide selection of trendy cocktails and killer gourmet tacos.
The aptly named Rooftop Bar and Restaurant (23 Vendue Range, 843/723-0485, Tues.–Sat. 6 p.m.–2 a.m.) at the Library Restaurant in the Vendue Inn is a very popular waterfront happy hour spot from which to enjoy the sunset over the Charleston [2] skyline. It’s also a hot late-night hangout with a respectable menu.
Located in a 200-year-old building and suitably right above a cigar store, Club Habana (177 Meeting St., 843/853-5900, Mon.–Sat. 5 p.m.–1 a.m., Sun. 6 p.m.–midnight) is the perfect place to sink down into a big couch, warm yourself by the fireplace, sip a martini (or port or single-malt scotch), and enjoy a good smoke in the dim light. Probably the last, best vestige of the cigar bar trend in Charleston [2], Club Habana remains popular. You get your cigars downstairs in Tinderbox Internationale, which features a range of rare “Legal Cuban” smokes, i.e., rolled from pre-embargo tobacco that’s been warehoused for decades in Tampa, Florida.
