Expansive Hampton Park is a favorite recreation spot for Charlestonians. The surrounding area near the east bank of the Ashley River has some of the earliest suburbs of Charleston [1], now in various states of restoration and hosting a diverse range of residents.
Hampton Park is bordered by streets all around, which can be fairly heavily trafficked because this is the main way to get to The Citadel [2]. But the park streets are closed to traffic Saturday mornings in the spring 8 a.m.–noon so neighborhood people, especially those with young children, can enjoy themselves without worrying about the traffic.
This is also where the Charleston Police stable their Horse Patrol steeds.
