When it comes to romantic getaways, Savannah and the Georgia coast have everything you'll need for a stress-free weekend for two. Spanish moss, friendly beaches, sunsets over the water, sultry weather, moonlit carriage rides—what more could you ask for?
After your arrival in Savannah [1], begin with a leisurely walk through the squares of the Historic District [2]. Avoid the lines at Lady & Sons [3] and instead share a late lunch at quiet little Firefly Café [4] on Troup Square. Enjoy gourmet coffee on Chippewa Square at Gallery Espresso [4]. Check into your romantic B&B, such as the Foley House Inn [5] in the heart of downtown.
Tonight take in a show at the Lucas Theatre [6], a short walk away. Afterwards, walk down Broughton Street [7] and have a late bite at the swank bar of Il Pasticcio [4]. Up for a crazy night of dancing? Club One [8]’s the ticket.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and mosey on down to Forsyth Park [9] and soak in its open greenspace. Pick up a few healthy goods at nearby Brighter Day Natural Foods [10] and get in the car and go have a picnic at moss-draped, poignant Bonaventure Cemetery [11] (yes, this cemetery can actually be quite romantic).
Continue on to the scenic drive out to Tybee Island [12]. Once on Tybee, kayaking couples [13] can make the run across the Back River to secluded, undeveloped Little Tybee Island for a truly intimate nature experience. Or just take your time and walk along the beach until sunset. Have a quiet, classy dinner at the Hunter House [14] before retiring back to the mainland for the evening, perhaps with a downscale nightcap at the always-fun Pinkie Masters [15] or Hang Fire [15].
After breakfast, check out and take the scenic drive down the coast to Jekyll Island. Loll around on Driftwood Beach before checking into the Jekyll Island Club Hotel for a luxurious night in a suite that once may have hosted a famous millionaire. Rent a bike and criss-cross the whole island in the late afternoon, coming back to the Club to enjoy a romantic dinner by the fireplace at the Courtyard at Crane on the grounds.
Get up bright and early and drive down to St. Marys to take the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore, surely one of the most romantic locations on earth. Rent a bike on arrival and take your time pedaling among the ruins of the old mansions, making sure to visit the chapel at First African Baptist Church, site of the wedding of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
Before you board the ferry to conclude your journey, maybe you’ll get lucky and encounter some of the island’s famous wild horses, a fitting symbol of passion and romance.
