La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is one of the world's longest canoe races, and it is held in Belize in honor of Baron Bliss Day, a holiday in March that celebrates the country's biggest historical benefactor. The race pits paddler teams in various categories against each other as they make their way down 175 miles from the Hawksworth Bridge in San Ignacio to the Belcan bridge in downtown Belize City. If you're in country, you don't want to miss the cultural festivities on March 6 in San Ignacio (though most rooms will be booked, so plan ahead) -- or try to be in Belize City on March 9 as the racers pull into the city.
