The high country around the Beartooth Highway [1] is crossed by hiking trails and speckled with lakes. Hiking trails across fragile alpine terrain are rarely forged paths; rather, they’re less precise routes marked by rock cairns.Road trip with recreation options
For a short hike through an alpine meadow, drive up to the fire lookout on Clay Butte and hike a little over a mile along the ridge.
For a longer trek, take Trail 614 at the switchback in the road up to the lookout and hike about four miles (generally downhill) around Beartooth Butte to Beartooth Lake. There’s a lovely campground at Beartooth Lake, and a loop hike around the butte passes several other lakes in its seven-mile course.
