The Yellowstone River is a blue-ribbon trout stream. Summer and fall are the most popular seasons to fish the Yellowstone. In early summer the salmon flies and caddis flies hatch. Around August, trout feed on grasshoppers near the river’s edge. Numerous fishing-access sites dot both Highway 89 and East River Road.

Besides the Yellowstone, a couple of “spring creeks” challenge the skillful angler. The two most notable of these, Nelson’s and Armstrong’s, are on private land and a fee is charged for fishing them.
