Founded in 1893, Montana State University (406/994-0211, www.montana.edu [1]) is the state’s oldest university. Originally the “ag school” in the state system, it is now a haven for some 12,000 outdoorsy students with a technical bent. The university, located south and west of the city center (take 7th Avenue south from Main Street to find the campus), is dominated by unremarkable modern buildings and, except for the Museum of the Rockies [2] at the edge of campus, isn’t really much of a destination.
