In 1877, rather than move onto a reservation, Chief Joseph’s band of Nez Percé [1] fled their home in northeastern Oregon and Idaho to find refuge with the Crow tribe. When they paused to rest in the Big Hole [2], they were ambushed by the U.S. Army. The Big Hole National Battlefield, which preserves the site of the battle, is a moving place to visit in a beautiful setting.
