The M & M (9 N. Main St.) is probably the most famous bar in the state; the mix of gambling, a 24-hour café, and a clientele of hardened bargoers makes this institution one of Butte’s [1] most authentic assets. The M & M, which opened in 1890, has had several owners over the years, but its doors had reputedly never been locked. The bar closed down in April 2003, and a locksmith had to be called because the lock mechanism wouldn’t turn. Fortunately new owners have taken over, and the M & M is back to its 24-hour activity.
